Messy UML

The UML's central committee meeting is likely to be extended for a few more days, as the row over the party's leadership and its working unity with the Maoists intensifies.

The meeting is deliberating on general secretary Madhab Nepal's 22-page report which concludes that the UML's role in the government has become ineffective. The UML recalled its previous team in the government, led by KP Oli, following a similar report by Nepal. That time around the party said it was satisfied with the overall performance of the government, but now the UML feels the government has failed.

Some members want to change the party's leadership by holding its general convention before the constituent assembly election. Former general secretary Jhalanath Khanal is to table a proposal to create a left-party alliance with the Maoists, which Oli and Nepal are expected to oppose.
