For the first time, there is an official demand to disclose the property details of King Gyanendra and the royal family. The 'poor nation's rich king' has been given a 15 day deadline, after which the public accounts committee of the parliament has decided to form its own investigation team to reveal the royal wealth.

The committee will send a letter to the royal palace through the cabinet. But there is still no certainty if the palace will submit the property details. Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Narendra Bikram Nembang has said the process for disclosing the king's property will start after discussion at the cabinet. After the royal massacre, all of King Birendra's property was transferred to King Gyanendra.

These included the Narayanhiti Palace, Nagarjun Palace and the forest, Gokarna, Matatirtha and Satungal, Balaju, Sallaghari of Bhaktapur and Pokhara. Other royal property includes Nirmal Nibas, Kathmandu Plaza, Bijaya Nibas in Tahachal, Diyalo Bungalow in Bharatpur, Himalayan Tea Garden in Jhapa and so on.

For many years, Nepali citizens have wanted the king's wealth made public and nationalised. This will be possible after all the royal properties are made public. Sanubhai Dangol, who worked with the palace for the last 35 years, said that the king himself would find it difficult to estimate his true worth. The king is said to have deposited hundreds of millions of dollars in a Swiss bank. In addition, nearly nine tons of gold were taken to Europe.
