Royal ministers released

The Supreme Court ordered the released of two former royal ministers Kamal Thapa and Tanka Dhakal on Sunday. They were amongst the five ministers of the royal government detained for conspiring against the April pro-democracy movement.

Responding to a writ filed on 5 June by the former ministers a division bench of justices Sarada Prasad Pundit and Badri Kumar Basnet ordered their release saying there were no legal grounds to keep them under detention. They were detained at Number 2 Battalion of Nepal Police in Maharajgunj.

Thapa and Dhakal were arrested on 12 May along with three other former ministers of the King's cabinet, Ramesh Nath Pandey, Sirish Shumsher Rana and Nikshay Shumsher Rana and were sent to 90-day detention.

While the other three were released on 4 June, a full bench of the SC comprising of Chief Justice Dilip Kumar Poudel and Justices Min Bahadur Raymajhi, Ram Nagina Singh, Anup Raj Sharma and Khil Raj Regmi gave Sunday's released order.
