'Dolma' used to run a souvenir shop on Pokhara's lakeside. A Dutch tourist befriended her last year, and they fell in love. He took her to Goa, gave her $3,000 and proposed to her. 'Dolma', now 30, refused. What she didn't know was that she had been secretly filmed at their hotel room in Goa and that video is now being openly sold in Nepal and through the Internet. Says Dolma: "I was really angry, I am really stressed out and haven't been able to go to my shop."

'Tek' is from Dharan and lives in the UK where he was having an affair with the wife of a friend. They used to meet in hotels and he had filmed themselves making love. On a recent trip to Kathmandu he found out on arrival that the video was in circulation throughout Nepal. He flew right back to London. The woman's father tried to commit suicide after seeing the film. The viedo file was copied and circulated by a repair shop where 'Tek' had given his laptop for repair.

Jibacha Yadav was a math teacher in Banke who was sexually abusing a grade eight student in his school. He blackmailed her with videos he had taken of them in bed taken with his mobile phone. Yadav is now in jail because the girl reported him to the police.

Tej Chand in Kanchanpur tempted an aspiring model with a movie career and filmed them in bed together. Chand's assistant copied the film out of his hard drive and sold it to a video parlour for Rs 5,000, which in turn passed the video on to a mobile store for Rs 10,000. The DVD is for sale for Rs 500, can be loaded into mobile phones for Rs 50, or rented in video parlours across western Nepal and even in India.

As DVD cameras, mobile phones, computers and the Internet become affordable and accessible, more and more Nepalis are using the technology for filming and distributing pornography.

Combined with tourism, the trend has made Nepal one of the points of origin for pornographic films and even paedophilic material on the Web. Many young Nepali women have been unwittingly involved in the trade, some being exploited and blackmailed by their male partners.

With globalisation, increased travel, the Internet and the spread of cable, Nepal's social mores have been transformed within one generation. Nepalis, who used to find Bollywood song sequences "racy", or hide their faces when Nepali actress Rekha Thapa appeared in a swimsuit, are now routinely exposed to sexually-explicit content.

A Himal Khabarpatrika investigation has revealed that "blue films" are more widely available than previously estimated in video parlours, mobile phone shops and even paan kiosks across the country. Pornographic videos that used to be available only to the urban upper class or traders returning from Bangkok now have audiences right through the social strata and even in rural areas.

What is new is that the people seen in sexually explicit acts in these videos are no longer just Thai, Japanese or western women but Nepalis. The DVDs have names like Nepali Lovers Homemade Hardcore or Nepali Rani. Some of the protagonists are young Nepali women who were filmed without their knowledge like 'Dolma'. Personal material like that made its way into the public domain by accident.

But some are sex workers who have willingly serviced foreign customers in their hotel rooms, knowing that the camera was rolling. 'Maya' is a fifth grade dropout from Syangja and works in Thamel with hundreds of other young Nepali women. She sees nothing wrong with being featured in pornographic videos that are circulated worldwide.

"My father is illiterate and lives in the village, he is not going to see me, and what do I care if others do?" asks 'Maya' who says she is paid Rs 70,000 per shoot.

The growing frequency with which Nepali women are featured in Internet porn sites also seems to suggest a surge in sex tourism, especially in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Driven out of their home districts by the conflict and desperate for jobs, young women easily fall prey to cyber pimps.

Cybercaf?s in Kathmandu and district capitals are setting aside private cubicles specially designed for tandem porn viewing either on the net, or through DVDs.

When an increased number of paedophilic material started appearing on the Internet five years ago and were traced back to Nepal, Interpol wrote to Nepal Police to investigate. Some arrests were made, but child sex material from Nepal is still finding its way to the net.

"It is inevitable that when traditional value systems are eroded by the content of new technology, and if new education and culture doesn't replace it, societal mores are altered," says sociologist Suresh Dhakal.

Because of the novelty of the medium and the ease with which mobile phones can be used for video, there are also increasing numbers of cases where women are victimised by ruthless partners. In a way, this seems to be a high-tech extension of the exploitation of young Nepali women trafficked for generations by their husbands, boyfriends or even relatives.

Psychologist Sharmila Manandhar believes that the spread of pornography in Nepal represents just one aspect of rapidly-changing interactions in what was till recently a closed, traditional society.

She adds: "But pornography also reinforces traditional relationships because the videos focus on male satisfaction and reflect the entrenched patriarchal nature of our society."

Some names have been changed.

Save people like Dolma. Who want's to enter the business by their will. It's time to make it legal. No point in making it illegal, after all it's happening so widely. Give license to F**K, S***X, it's rule of nature.

2. Concerned, Sikka
Is this one of the maoist strategy to pacify people with sex and alcohol??? and Himalmedia is making it public, are the government paying you to be a media pimp?

3. Yes Yes, Kathmandu
Porn should be made legal. What else Nepal has got to export?

4. tired
yes "Yes Yes" ... how about we start by some of your sister's , your mother's, your friends, even yours ??? Most of these women were conned and did not want to be porn stars. Making fun of this issue just says how complacent we've become. Make it legal by all means, but ONLY after those who do not want to take part can be safeguarded, those who force women (or men) can be prosecuted !

5. Disgusted
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This just shows how low people will stoop to. The government needs to make a law making it illegal for people to film without the knowledge and agreement of the partner. Those people who do it without the partner agreeing to be filmed should be in jail. Girls! Beware of predators like theses.

Shame on you Pun.You have reported as if you are proud of this filth happening in Nepal. You have not suggested how this evil could be checked and controlled. You have not mentioned how badly this evil virus can affect our youth. The most dangerous thing about pornography is many young people start believing naively what they watch or see. They don't know the truth behind this evil trade. The reality is women are either conned or forced into it.It is a huge exploitation of female gender. Many women actresses are drug addicts, some do for the sake of "love"(they are madly in love with these callous psychopaths who make money out of it) Shame on our government for not being able to monitor and control the spread of this evil virus.

7. UTOK
They just want to push their sales up by posting such lewd images. It comes to no surprise that they'd do so. I am going to go the bathroom and throw up now

Porn is nothing new in Nepal. when I first moved there in 1984, porn videos were shown in homes, and i'd see men going up stairs near my home. I asked my neighbor one day, why are there always men going up and down the stairs all day? silly, young and naive me! They paid an entrance fee to watch the films. There will always be a market for sex, there has been throughout history. What society needs are protections for the girls who are involved in this trade, most of whom do it out of sheer poverty. And the law needs to abided by. In the state of Nevada in the USA, prostitution is legal and workers are regularly tested, standards are set, the facilitIes are clean. it is a nice working environment. this applies to the US porn industry, as well.As long as there are men who want sex, porn and prostitution will exist. Legalizing this industry and protecting the workers should be the primary concern, not banning it. Hey, look at it this way. Most porn is boring after the first 5 minutes or so!! after that, you're ready to move on to something else! oh, and yes, i'm a woman, and i have looked at (and enjoyed) porn at various times in my life. i'm also a professional with a doctorate who is rather bored by porn now at the ripe old age of 46. sex is sex. we all got here that way!

9. margaret, francon, france
I have one more comment to add to the above. I am far more offended by the words used some of the comments made on this site than the article itself, which enlightened us about a serious subject in Nepal. I have great sympathy for these women, who are just trying to earn a living, whether you agree with the way they choose to earn it or not or whether you think it is ruining your society (which I doubt,, as there are far worse things going on in your society than sex on film and prostitution).Jesus said, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone". wise advice that some of the above posters might heed.

10. Yuki
I agree with "keeping things clean". Please don't try to impose your western hypocrisy onto us.

11. K RAI, uk
Margareta or Margaret,if we followed your advice Nepal would turn into another Bankok or Amsterdam. We do not want that. Legalisation would encourage this evil to flourish not decline. Are you aware of the serious negative effect in Newzealand since prostitution was legalised?Do you know why Sweden is against its legalisation? There is no doubt that moral degradation is associated with increased crime and societal breakdown.I am amazed you are advocating legalisation although you claim to be a woman.

12. margareta, francon, france
Amsterdam is one of the loveliest and most liveable cities I know. Many Nepalese go to Bangkok just for sex, Mr. Rai. They have laws in Thailand that require the girls to be tested. It doesn't always work, but they are trying. Personally, I find most Thai lovely people and they have a very open attitude about sex that is healthy. Its not western hypocrisy. What about the karma sutra? have you had a look at any of your temples lately? you see orgies, for god's sakes! no one seems to mind. It has nothing to do with "western degradation". Sex is sex, and people will find ways to enjoy it. The issue is protecting the girls and young women who take part in it, especialy those who are doing so unwillingly. That is the issue, not sex. Again, I say, he who is without sin cast the first stone". trust me, you have far worse problems in your society than sex. Sex doesn't require a kukri! by the way, have you seen the lovely naked photos of the new first lady of france, carla bruni? the French love them. They have a very open and positive attitude. one reason I love living here.

13. margareta, francon, midi pyrenees, france
In Sweden, they have criminalized the BUYING OF SEX, not the SELLING of sex. So it the MEN who are being punished, which is the way it should be. and, yes, Mr. Rai, i'm a woman, and i enjoy sex and have enjoyed porn. i'm also a PhD in anthropology, was a university professor and am a very normal healthy woman with a normal libido. i'm not a criminal, nor is my husband nor are the majority of people who choose to view porn.nor have we destroyed western society or your society. its not the porn that is the issue here. its the victimization of poor women who are forced to take part against their will. Women who are poor will always sell their bodies, as they have done throughout time. that is nothing new. Just look at your temples in durbar square as evidence of that! As sweden has done, the answer is to criminalize the buying of sex, which will, of course, never happen in Nepal. so the only sensible alternative (the best one) is to legalize it, require testing, clean working environments, etcm and prosecute the men who abuse this. what about trafficking of young nepali women? do you blame that on porn? that has been going on for ages and ages, long before porn came out on the mass market. legalizing it and attempting to monitor it is a start in protecting these vulnerable women from abuse, not banning it.

14. Gavin
The common sense should prevail; the need of the hour is perhaps to be focused on advocating, spreading the awareness and sensitising the issue in the backward, illiterate and impoverished communities. Hitherto, only a handful of ill resourced agencies are working towards the prevention of sexual exploitation, trafficking and domestic abuse, that too, may cease when the foreign alms dries up. The ominous silence now, of nepali civics will only aggravate the situation, its better late than never, to preserve the nepali pride of being rich in conservatism, traditional and cultural values otherwise in years not so distant, Nepal will perhaps be a hot spot for international sex traders, Making it a taboo is to victimize more young women and children so move on with time and let go the culture scolding of others dementedly.....

15. tired
I am a nepali woman and I agree with the Margareta viewpoints. I think the way to go would be to legalise it, punish the men or the "buyers", provide education about sexual heath and screening ! @Yuki, and how exactly do you propose to keep things clean ? Why do you think sex is unclean ? It is unclean only when women are forced to have sex when they don't want to and by doing nothing, we are not helping anyone's cause. Having outdated views and keeping a closed mind in the name of "keeping things clean" is not going to help anyone.

16. Yuki
ms margaret, just because this works in holland doesn't mean it will in Nepal. That's the problem with you westerners. You make naive and ignorant generalizatons based on one small example. Holland is beautiful, I agree, but not because of the hookers and the porn industry (if that is your point). Nothing wrong with appreciating human sexuality, but I don't think it is ethical to sell it in the market.

17. YUKI
to ms tired, with all due respect. If your daughter comes to you one day and says "Mom I want to be a pornstar or a prostitute" You're going to let that happen?? and that's my point. What I am doing is trying to preserve the sacred nature of sex.

18. Furious
19. Furious The problem with Asians is that we are shy and dismissive especially when it comes to talking about sex. Just talking about sex openly and freely would start to educate ourselves on these issues like prostitution and trafficking. We should talk more about issues related to sex at home, among friends and in public. By the time we bring it from the realm of taboo to a topic of discussion we would have solved half the problem. I am not sure if the society Nepal is now ready for legalization of prostitution but i admit that its legalization and safeguard would certainly protect thousands of women.

19. Furious
Thanks to Mr, Pun for bringing into light such a prevalent problem into discussion.

20. K RAI, UK
Dear Dr Margareta,we were talking about pornography and prostitution not sex.No one is against healthy consensual sex between consenting adults. No one is saying Amsterdam is not a great city and Thais are not nice people. My views were very clear and specific.

21. K RAI, UK
When you criminalise the buying of sex you are indirectly discouraging selling of sex,are not you?If there are no buyers will there be sellers? Again, the most dangerous things about pornography are young people start believing what they watch, and the perversion rife in it. Poverty is only one factor pushing women into prostitution. Please do not forget upbringing, culture, moral values and most importantly things like drug addiction, damaged psychology and circumstances like coercion, deception and blackmailing.

22. waiba, dwaiba@yahoo.com
I think its easy to take the moral high ground when it come sex industry, but we Nepalese have face the fact that more than 5,000 girls gets trafficked into Indian sex trade every year. NGO talks about it and government does not do anything about it and we only talk about it. I think its high that we learn from other countries and find out what can be done about it. Thailand have done well with its erotic tourism. It has brought in investment, development and prosperity . I think Nepal has the potential for both exotic and erotic tourism. If we can mix exotic and erotic, we can reduce exploitation of girls and the flesh traffic into India and bring economy development in Nepal. There are negative side to this industry, but positive out weight the negative... just my small thought..

23. Anti Porn
I think prostitution is a result of the perversion created within the minds of porn viewers (as Mr K Rai mentioned). People, after watching such images or videos, want to reenact certain types of sexual fantasies that might be unhealthy. And if they can't do it with their partner, they go insearch of another outlet: brothels. So pornography is the first seed that eventually sprouts into sexual deviances and immorality. And we all know what ensues: AIDS, squandering of money, infidelity towards the spouse, and so on. So lets eradicate this satanic practice.

24. Jujubhai, Asan
A country that tolerates the trafficking of its young women to become prostitutes in India and has no right to hold the moral high ground on porn. We have to stop this shameful real-life exploitation of our women before getting all worked up about reel-life smut.

25. Anil, Sydney
margaretas vs Yukis vs anti-Porns happened a century ago. it's difficult to be sure if things are happening for the better though. I am sure someone else has already said this too. It's an interesting space/time continuum we are witnessing.

26. X, Y
Is law legal in Nepal? Prostitution has been considered illegal but we know it is so widespread. It's better to give licence to work to those who are interested in the jumping business. Inocent girls are being trafficked to Bombay, and it has been happening since so long. Illegal business are in BOOM, and all the legal business are running down. Welcome to New Nepal. Jump every Night, it's legally illegal, but practically possible.

27. Anti Porn
To Jujubhai: We need to start at the grass root level, and work our way to the top. As I mentioned earlier, pornography is at the bottom rung of sexual immorality in Nepal. Only after we eradicate it, can we move towards a higher level. One step at a time.

28. Margareta, Francon, France (at the moment!)
Thank you, Jujubhai, for the most sane comment here (and a rave to "Tired', as well). Mr. Rai, my comment about Amsterdam was related to yours about the high crime rates. Amsterdam is not suffering because of porn. Again, porn is not the issue. As Jujubhai pointed out, "a country where thousands and thousands of its young women are trafficked to India each year has no right to hold the moral high ground on porn". As for porn destroying morality in your country, I would guess the vast majority of people who watch porn are decent human beings. sexual fantasy has always been, and its only been recently people have put it on film. once video cameras and mobile phones came onto the market in Nepal, it was only a matter of time people would use them to film sex. i pointed out in my original post of the nepali men on the street in naxal where i lived when i worked in nepal in 1984 who would pay to watch porn videos.porn was readily available then, too. you could go to any video shop and purchase it, albeit illicitly. was that the cause of all of your society's problems? I disagree with Anti Porn. You won't eradicate porn ever, as you will never eradicate prostitution. What you need to do is raise awareness, find ways to legalize it to ensure the women choosing to work in porn are not victimized, and if they are being forced to, that they can go to the police and have the men who are abusing them held accountable under the law.Young women need to be educated and empowered, as well, to know their rights under the law and to feel safe that they can report when they are being coerced or abused. eradicate trafficking and uphold the laws you already have. porn is the last of your worries. By the way, there are also lots of male prostitutes in Kathmandu. what do you think the trannies are doing on the street corners across from Fire and Ice late at night? Just hanging out? Its Nepali men coming up on motorcycles soliciting them. Of course, they are not the victimized ones. They are choosing this lifestyle, and I bet you many Nepali women choose it too. They choose it because it is the only way to feed their families . This is the reality and has always been so and will always be so. Dont' go hiding your head in the sand or say, Anti Porn, that we must eradicate it. it will never be eradicated. grab them or touch them illicitly). Finally, do you know where most sexual abuse takes place (and ALWAYS HAS). THE HOME. Among your own family members.

29. tired
@YUKI. I am fortunate that I have an education , am working and can educate my daughter or son so he/she can have the CHOICE to not to prostitute herself/himself to SURVIVE. There is NO CHOICE for thousands of nepali daughters forced into prostitution or porn and at least by legalising it, victims can seek help, abusers can be prosecuted and those who want to can do so without society stigmatising them ! If you have some personal ethics with regards to porn, by all means don't watch it be involved in it...but there are thousands who watch it everyday and there are thousands who are WILLINGLY part of it. Why impose your ethics on them. Why not focus on helping those who are forced into it ?

Margarita, I do not agree with margarita here in this forum. Sex has been always a controversial subject in Europe, Nepal or any part of the world from the ancient time. The porno postures in temple area are not meant to encourage people to have open sex, group sex but they are posted as basic education for common people about the relationship between man and women, sex, love etc through a religious and sacred place so that people do not misguide since there were no printed materials, schools or any one available who could educate sex. Please note that the porno posters are never placed on the main temple building where main worship takes place but they are always in the surrounding places or next building although they all look same. A porn picture around the temple is a part of lesson for public but no one hangs them at their main entrance. There are many religious book available that has a chapter of sex. One of them is Garud Puran which describes partly from sex - birth to death. A visit to temple has many more scientific reasons bundled with values of culture, religion, love, faith, education where an European's naked eye, mind, camera simply can not understand. The elders say that sex is a natural process. It has to come out naturally. Unnatural sex is always considered as a sin. Do you think animals go to temple or watch porn DVD ?

31. Kaji,,, Part II
Sex, drugs, corruption, extortions, exploitations, grids etc, believed to exist in every human. It depends how good one can use, control and expose ? If a man or women can rise above the given factors then they are known as God or Goddess means above the human. That's why, we have many god & goddess in our country. Today, we are importing disease like AIDS, PORNO SEX, HOMO SEX, DRUGS, All VIRUS, JUNK FOODS, JUNK CLOTHING which is polluting the entire nation. As a result, we are loosing values of our culture, exploiting own society, advocate to legalise sex. Amsterdam, a tiny city in the middle of Europe can not be taken as example of legal sex business. This is not something like testing a French wine. Sex, drugs, corruptions, extortions, exploitations are either influenced by some one or because of temptation or selfishness or to satisfy by way of either one. Yes, Kama sutra was there practically made for higher class, royals to communicate in sex language who could have many women's, girls at their place. The common people in high % never had to borrow or out of reach. One can not blame to the entire society for sex just because Kama Sutra existed. The Kama Sutras are portrayed in the hands of Maharaja, Raja, or high class family and it never played a role of Porn DVD as today. Because there were responsible societies above the sex that did not allow to cross the limit.

32. Yuki
to ms. tired: the porn industry is worth billions of dollars. Don't you think this money could have been used to prevent starvation, cure diseases, and educate the youth?? More than half the global internet viewing can be attributed to pornography. Don't you think this time could have been spent towards something more productive and fruitful (we're talking billions of hours). Do we really want the porn industry to be so strong in Nepal. What are our priorities??? And when was the last time you ever heard a prostitute or a porn star living a glorious life. You haven't, because no such thing exists. It always ends up in misery, suffering and self loathing. Do we want
