MIN RATNA BAJRACHARYA
STRIDING AHEAD: Rahul, Nirvana and Varun Chaudhary with Dad Binod (white suit) in Kathmandu on Wednesday.
"We now have to let economic agenda take centre stage in Nepal," says Binod Chaudhary, "we are done with politics."

The 53-year-old head of the Chaudhary Group (CG) says this is the reason he agreed to become a UML-nominated member of the Constituent Assembly along with other businessmen.

"This is why my colleagues and I joined the assembly. We now want to make sure that the economy takes centre stage," Chaudhary said in an interview after being selected as the Nepali Times Company of the Month for July.

Binod Chaudhary has a lot to be proud of: a third-generation Nepali Marwari business family that has become Nepal's first multinational with over $500 million in assets and revenues that Forbes Asia recently called 'among Nepal's richest non-royals'.

Chaudhary's Cinnovation group with its hotel division has invested in tourism, manufacturing and trade, owning hotels in New York, Malaysia, Maldives and Sri Lanka. The group is still in full expansion mode with partners to set up luxury hotels in Singapore, Thailand and Bali.

But Chaudhary still sees Nepal as his base. "You have to have a certain mindset to be a global player," he says, "but our roots are here and I get the greatest satisfaction from being able to invest and create new jobs in Nepal."

Indeed, ever since taking over from his father Lunkaran Das Chaudhary and starting a department store in New Road in the 1970s, CG is now the biggest business player in Nepal literally 'Touching Life Everyday', as the company's motto has it. CG's WaiWai instant noodle is a recognised and established brand not just in Nepal but in 20 different countries. CG's trading wing sells LG electronics and Marutis.

"Entrepreneurship only really took off after the Panchayat, but even through the difficult period after 1990 there has been dramatic growth in business in Nepal," says Chaudhary, "in fact, if there were right policies and proper governance, Nepal's economy could really take off."

Chaudhary says Nepal should now concentrate on core areas like manufacturing, hydropower, financial services and tourism and would like to work to make investment possible in these sectors as a member of the CA.

In fact, CG itself is investing in a 2 million ton annual capacity cement plant. Nepal consumes 2.6 million tons of cement annually, and this is expected to grow at 15 per cent a year.

Chaudhary also sees no other alternative but to invest boldly in hydropower in a big way to reduce Nepal's growing balance of payments gap with India. His group alone is involved in studying several projects in the
5 MW-600 MW range totaling 1,700 MW. Investment in cement, tourism and hydropower alone could create hundreds of thousands of new jobs.

"If there is one job that is really easy in the world, it is to raise capital through mutual funds, venture capital. All you need is a track record and a good idea," he says. Chaudhary is confident that with proper support there is no reason why up to 10 other Nepali businesses can also expand their overseas investments.

Chaudhary is not as pessimistic as others about a new government led by the Maoists. He says the regime change is an opportunity for Nepal to be more focussed on private sector-led growth, provide an investment-friendly climate for domestic and foreign investors and allow industries to spread their wings in an unfettered way.

Chaudhary has one pet-idea that he says could immediately increase national income: train 50,000 workers waiting to go abroad in English and basic skills to double their monthly income. This, he says, will have an immediate impact on remittances.

1. Rabindra Tibrewala, sanepa
Please ask him whether he is involved in making nepalese banks bankrupt, and also whether he has any role in making the beaureocrats corrupt. rabindra

2. saroj P, psaroj@hotmail.com
Fully agree with you Mr.Tibrewal. After that one case of bank default (or bad debt) of one of his companies, I thought he would land up in prison. I was surprised he bought his way into the Constituent Assembly!!

3. Dilip Agarwal, Baneswor, Kathmandu
Nepali Ties: Pease do not make heroes out of these white collared crooks. Isn't there one man with guts in the revenue intelligence department to put these people where they belong?

4. flptrtps
Nepalis all over the world have one common thing among them. Pessimism. One simple Nepali turned businessman with his vision and hardwork today has become Mr. Chaudhary and all you have got is these comments. It suffocates me to see intellectuals like you who read NT passing comments like these. Have some optimism please and it will change your life. Try. Please.

5. Dipak, Cardiff
Here is one Nepali who has made it, and what do fellow-Nepalis do? They try to bring him down. This is why Nepal will never go forward, we are all kuwa ko bhyaguytas. Not one positive thought about anything in our brains.

6. Pramod Dahal, Kathmandu
I can understand Chaudhry making a fool out of some parachute journalist from Forbes magazine. But editors at Nepali Times should have been a bit more careful. As a father who wants to impart good values in my children, I find it very frustrating when a paper like Nepali Times publishes articles making heroes out of such people.Nepal is a small country and we all know each others background and history. If you can't book such people for their misdeeds ( because they have bought the administration and politicians), at least do not make heroes out of them.

7. Birendra, Samakhusi
When is he going to repay the debt he owes to the nation in the form of defaulted bank loans? Perhaps Mr. Chaudhary can repay the people of Nepal the hard cash he owes them before becoming a multi-national company? Or, does asking questions like this make me a Kuwa ko Bhyaguto?

8. Pramod Dahal, Kathmandu
Dear Editors: I would really appreciate if you published my posting (#8) in your next issue. It is not derogatory (considering how you guys have tarnished the image of our politicians) . I want people to know that not allparents want the likes of Chaudharys to be the role model for their children.

9. ram, kl
What a contradiction. In markets, Mr. Chaudhary seems to stand for competition. In politics, he gets ahead by patronage.

The Chaudary group is no question, good at what they do. For them the end justifies the means. As Nepalis we cannot till date hold multiple citizenships, yet this family does in personal confession by Mr.Chaudary's sons. They might be the richest non-royals yet they owe milions in unpaid debt in the name of their corporations. This debt is bankrupting nepal based banks and nepali shareholders. I must say this is all very fitting for a nepali politician.

16. SP, SYDNEY
iF Chaudhary Group is not one of the leading name in the industry of Nepal than i would not have any objection regarding the debts owed by the Binod Chaudhary or Chaudhary Group. I seek answers for following questions: 1. What is the annual turnover of this group? 2.how much annual tax this group pays to the government? 3.how much employment it generates in the job market of Nepal? 4. How important is and was the role played by this group in Nepal's economy? 5. How many other Chaudhari Groups at the same level are in Nepal? 6. Do we tagged all the entrepreneurs and industrialists as the blackmailer or corrupt? 7. if we could praise the name like Dhiru bhai ambani and Laxmi mittal , why not Binod chauddhary? Guys to be the industrialist and being the leader of the business empire like Chaudhary Group is not a child game. We have to construct a positive way for industrialist to act best in the social interest , trace them to practice social responsibility and persuade new entrepreneurs at the same time. Peace!

17. Yalamber, Ilam
Every body Above Most of our bureaucrats in the ministry of Finance ,Industry &customs are all Bahuns&if they dont take GHUS then their JAAT goes so what's wrong Chaudhary group is saving Jaat of this Great Jaat.....

20. Dipak Rai, CArdiff
The problem with Nepal is there is too much freedom. Anyone can say anything about anyone and get away with it. Freedom comes with responsibility and we see no sense of responsibility in comments like in this posting, no debating of ideas, only personal attacks, libellous statements, defamation. Badar ko hat ma naribel.

21. C.K.Shrestha, Ktm.
We are a hopeless people, we cannot appriciate achievements of our fellow citizens !! Any businessman will exploit the flaws in the system to his benifit& the Chaudharis can be no exception.Lets correct the system, punish the corrupt but with due process of law.Lets have more people like the Chaudharies so that the country can move forward>We are a consumer nation lets be a producer nation.JAI HEADLESS REPUBLIC!!

22. Gues , KTM
REMEMBER THAT MONEY IS A GOOD SERVANT BUT BAD MASTER. what about chaudhary?

23. Yeuta Nepali, Mississaga, Canada
I have observed the Chaudharis for a long time...............they are definitely business men and also crooks. The means justify the aims. This is what the Maoists did and are in power and this is what the Chaudharis and some others businessmen havedoen/are doing .......Yes, I would want my childern to emulate them. Both are not heroes, they do not have any morality or ethics.Could they achived the same in a more ethical and moral way becides being thives(Chaudharis) and murders(Maoists) ? I think they could.

24. deepak, usa
Why would not i be benefiting from loop holes and corrupt government employees if my country doesn't have proper mechanism to check massive corruption ? When you are in Rome, do what Romans do ! First we need to have clean politicians, make laws with no or little loops holes and bring some big corrupts to the justice and everything will be OK.

26. Prashant Singh, psingh@hotmail.com
I am not surprised that Mr. Chauhary managed to fool some parachute journalist from Forbes magazine. That he bought his way into the Constituent Assmbly also understandable. What surprises me is that Nepali Times decided to honour this person. Everyone in Nepal knows he is an unscrupulous businessman and a bank defaulter. I ask the editors at Nepali Times: Do you want Binod Chaudhury as a role model for your own sons and daughters??

27. everest
Mr. Chaudhary sucess should be seen as sucess of expatriate Rajasthani sucess. I know what i am talking about. I have worked in the Chaudhary Group, Sanepa. All the managerial jobs go to Indians. I prefer Upendra Mahoto than him.

28. Raj, SAnepa

Well Done! Keep up the good work fellas! People like these are hypocrites/ losers in life/ please do a serious introspection where you guys are sitting. No where. With this mind set you are getting no where too. Instead of being proud that at least someone from Nepal, a true entrepreneur who is true icon and titan in the Nepalese Industry has made it here and you idiots have nothing better in life but to post baseless comments. CG is a Nepalese company trying to take Nepal to the world. It is a 100% debt free company employing 6000 people in Nepal. There are 40 companies in Nepal. In all businesses it is either No. 1 or 2. None of the companies have ever defaulted. Mahalaxmi Case gave a clean chit as it was people like you who were trying to get Nepalese successful business like Mr. Chaudhary down. Truth comes out at the end. CG produces Nepalese products being exported to 20 countries. It has 45 CSR programs which directly touches the lives of 1.1 million people. All the companies overseas have Nepalese executives working. CG believes in and operates strong code of conduct and ethics which is prescribes strongly. Instead of making sweeping remarks like this is there any substance to it? CG is the highest tax payer in the country! Period. Nepalese economy despite the situation is still growing at 5% so whoever made this comment, please do not return back to Nepal. We are good without you. Mr. Chaudhary was respected and political parties welcomed him and gave him a platform to make a difference to the NEPALESE economy. What do you guys get in return? What are you guys? Who are you? What have you done? What have you given back?

32. Saroj
making fool of forbes? hee hee! which planet are you from and i bet you are still reading teens mags. its forbes you fool and not something which can be manipulated and asked for. interviews f people come after extensive research and through invitation. all accusattions like this not only to mr. chaudhary but also to other business people are such a shame. its generated by people who have nothin t do in life than to sit on their backs and criticise. wake up! if not something for yourself give something for the country. even if its small.

33. Tibremula
Tibrewala! pls tell us how chaudhary is making nepalese banks bankrupt? You cannot hold multiple citizenships my law abiding brother but you can hold assets if you are a Non- Resident Nepali. Have you read the act? stop making a fool of yourself.

34. Rabindra Rana, Lalitpur
How can such conmen portray themselves as millionaires. They have swindled millions out of Nepali Banks. Chaudhary gang are major Loan Defaulters and Tax evaders. They have bribed their way to the Constituent Assembly to escape the bank authorities and the Tax Revenue officials. The Mass Media should be very wary of highlighting such people.

35. Nikita, karmolepcha@gmail.com
my views are that Mr. Chaudhary is one intelligent man with a vision that he never gave up on inspite of the Country lack of.....ummm... EVERYTHING....i cannot think many names of people in Nepal who have grown so much over the years into becoming a figure of International Presence...I mean come on he was on Forbes...practically been covered by every nepali daily or publication or media house or channels....not because of the status or the bank balance he has...but probably because of the intelligence that man has...and i truly admire his honesty with regard to his world wide presence...this family has literally been growing over the years in front of our eyes...it feels like a responsibility to protect them from harsh words...they are people who carry my country's identity all over the world...and never have i heard a criticism from the international arena...so its sad to see my own people throwing all kinds of criticisms and harsh words at him...and not just him...i am equally proud of his sons as well..the younger boys have just started speaking but Mr. Nirvana Chaudhary is definitely someone i am proud of...i think he is a true heir to a truly iconic person...its wonderful to see a young boy like him growing into becoming an efficient entrepreneur...now we will just have to see how the other two boys are going to live up the expectations...and when talked about their defaults or crookedness or SUV's or leather chairs or bank balance or anything....i can easily overlook all that and only look at the fact that its people like them that at least a percentage of Nepalese have work to go....people like them who produce products after products which in turn generates more room for employment...people like these who influence other people to
