Maoists still on warpath

Maoist attacks on rival candidates continued this week with violations of the election code of conduct reported all over the country.

In the most serious attack, YCL members attacked a campaign rally of the NC in Kawasoti, Nawalparasi before Peace Minister Ram Chandra Poudel was due to speak. They vandalised three cars and scores of motorcycles, and injured NC candidate Om Kala Gautam. They also targeted police who were sent to calm the situation. NC rallies and candidates were also attacked in Piuthan, Solukhumbu, Ramechhap, Dhankuta, Rupandehi and Kapilbastu. UML supporters and candidates were attacked in Achham, Gulmi, Lamjung and Ramechhap.

The NC has lodged a complaint at the election commission detailing the attacks. The human rights body INSEC urged political parties on Sunday to respect their commitment to free and fair polls. "We want them to transform their commitments into actions," INSEC said.
